Helena College business student Greg Thompson is a recipient of the Montana Campus Compact Athletes in Service award. He will receive the award at the Cat-Griz Brawl of the Wild football game on Saturday, November 21st. The married father of three coaches high school students throughout the winter months in basketball through the Montana Christian Athletic Association.
In the nomination letter, Thompson was complimented on being a true role model. “Greg divides his time between being a husband, father, full-time student and part-time employee at Home Depot yet somehow finds 20 plus hours a week during the four-month basketball season to help develop the character of young men in Helena. He commits not only to coaching, but makes time to take “his boys” from Helena to Billings and back, then north to Kalispell, plus hits all major cities in Montana in between. It’s a full 20 game season with at least 20 hours a week dedicated to his team. Greg will openly tell you ‘we don’t always win and we don’t have the greatest athletes, but we do have fun and we are great sports about our experience. ‘He does all this while carrying a 3.9 GPA” When asked, Thompson will tell you he gives time to student athletes because athletics gave to him. “It gives the kids something to do and gives them life values, it sure helped me.”
Through its Montana Athletes In Service (or "MAIS") award, Montana Campus Compact affiliates honor civically engaged student athletes who have made significant contributions as volunteers in their communities. MAIS award recipients are recognized for their efforts to raise awareness about community issues, for encouraging other students to become more civically-engaged, and for actively serving in their communities.
The Diversity Committee at Helena College has partnered with the Helena Indian Alliance to highlight a display of Native American artifacts in the main hall of the Donaldson Campus on Roberts Street. Commemorating Native American History month, the display will be available for viewing through the month of November. The artifacts represent multiple tribes and some artifacts date back to the early 1900s.
